What are the differences between aesthetic fillings and traditional fillings?

Updated on: July 18, 2025

Cosmetic fillings are tooth-colored composite fillings that blend with the natural tooth color, offering a more aesthetically pleasing appearance. Traditional fillings, on the other hand, are typically made using amalgam (silver fillings) and create a more noticeable color difference in the tooth. Cosmetic fillings adhere better to the tooth, reducing the risk of fracture, but they can stain over time and have a lifespan of 5-10 years. Amalgam fillings, on the other hand, are very durable and preferred for large cavities and generally last 10-15 years. However, due to their silver color, they are not aesthetically desirable in visible areas. While there are some health concerns regarding the mercury content of amalgam fillings, regulatory bodies state that they are safe.
