What are the methods used during the operation?

Updated on: July 18, 2025

In connective tissue graft surgery, various techniques are used to treat gingival recession and increase soft tissue volume. The most common method is the subepithelial connective tissue graft (SCTG) for root coverage, which provides the best aesthetic results and predictable healing. SCTG can be obtained using different techniques, including single-incision, double-incision, and trap-cap (closed-field) techniques. Alternative materials such as xenogeneic collagen matrices are also being used to replace the connective tissue graft to reduce the donor site morbidity associated with autografts. These materials provide comparable results to SCTG in terms of increasing soft tissue thickness and achieving aesthetic results. Furthermore, coronally advanced flap (CAF) techniques are frequently used to provide root coverage using SCTG or other graft materials. Finally, methods such as the modified tunneling technique have been developed to increase the success rate of these surgical interventions.
