What kind of problems can gum disease cause if left untreated?

Updated on: July 18, 2025

Untreated gum disease can lead to serious oral health problems, such as gingivitis and periodontitis, which can lead to tooth loss, affecting approximately 10% of the world’s population. Periodontitis is a leading cause of tooth loss and affects approximately 42% of adults aged 30 and over. Beyond oral health, untreated gum disease is associated with systemic diseases such as cardiovascular disease, diabetes, and adverse pregnancy outcomes. For example, severe gum disease affects 1 billion people worldwide and can increase the risk of heart disease and stroke. Additionally, gum disease can worsen diabetes by making it harder to control blood sugar, and pregnant women with periodontal disease may have a higher risk of premature birth. Maintaining good oral hygiene and seeking timely dental care are crucial to preventing these complications.
